Itadaki
About This Spot
Nestled just a short stroll from the gleaming temple of Kinkakuji, Itadaki is a comforting pause in Kyoto’s bustling rhythm—a modest spot where quiet familiarity lingers in the air. The moment you approach, there’s an unspoken promise of ease and warmth, a cadence set by local students lined up patiently before the doors even swing open. Inside, the atmosphere is gentle and unhurried, with attentive staff moving with a calm efficiency that feels natural, not rushed, weaving a subtle background hospitality that makes you settle in effortlessly.
This Japanized western syokudo offers more than just a meal; it’s a quietly cheerful neighborhood refuge where traditional teishoku sets sit alongside homestyle western favorites, each plate casually balanced between comfort and thoughtfulness. From tender wagyu to crisp fried cutlets bathed in rich demi-glace, the flavors invite you to slow down, savor each bite, and notice the little details—the freshness of the salad, the warmly spiced pork katsu, and even vegan options that show the kitchen’s quietly inclusive care.
The portions are generous without being overwhelming, perfect for sharing or for those who appreciate a satisfying, grounded meal. There’s an honest simplicity at work here: the kind of place where the food feels like it’s crafted not just to fill, but to comfort and delight, echoing the rhythms of local life.
Whether it’s a lunch stop after temple visits or an easy-going dinner with friends or family, the welcoming vibe at Itadaki makes it a softly radiant discovery—a corner where familiar flavors meet gentle attentiveness and you can feel both rooted in Kyoto and connected to everyday moments that linger beyond the table.

This cosy little restaurant is just a short walk from Kinkakuji, and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. We arrived about 10 minutes before opening by chance, and there was already a small queue of local students waiting outside—a very good sign. The staff handed us the menu while preparing the dining area, and the wait was short and smooth. Once seated, service was quick and efficient. The place filled up almost immediately, and within 10 minutes, another queue had formed outside—mostly locals, which says a lot. The food itself was simple, warm, and comforting. Nothing overly fancy, but exactly the kind of satisfying meal you want after visiting Kinkakuji. It felt homey, flavourful, and made with care. Convenient location near the Golden Pavilion, cosy atmosphere, honest food. A lovely spot for a casual and satisfying meal after your temple visit. Would happily return and recommend to friends and family members.

Daily special of hamburg and katsu was decent. A good stop after paying visit to kinkaku ji. Price is really affordable during lunch hours, around 1000-1500 for full teisyoku. Its very popular with japanese high school students thanks to its price tag

Wow! Impressive! Made the right choice to come try this before we leave to Kiyomizu-dera. Love the portion, it huge! If you have kids, they can share. They offer water as well. They accept cash or card, have toilet for customers. Staff are attentive, the food taste great.

Visited on 11/6/2025 for lunch. Great Japanese comfort food at a very reasonable price. The dish comes out quite quick too. A must-visit restaurant if you are in the area

Went for a lunch after visiting Kinkaku-Ji temple. Very good food, all fresh and crisp, which is very important for fried food. Even the side salad was good and well tought out. The melon soda float was the cherry on top. It fills out fast, so you may have to wait. However, it is totally worth it.
